There’s a difference between going to a spa and actually letting it help you.
Some people walk in, get a massage, and rush right back to their day. Others slow down, ask the right questions, and walk out feeling like they’ve been handed a new nervous system. I’ve seen both, for over two decades now, and trust me, how you approach a spa day changes everything.
Here’s what I’d tell any guest, whether it’s their first time or their fiftieth: if you’re going to spend the time and money, don’t wing it. A little prep and a few good habits will make every minute inside that spa feel more worth it.
Before you book anything, take five minutes to think about what your body’s asking for. Is it sore from sitting too long? Is your mind wired? Are you just tired in a way you can’t explain?
Once you know what you’re looking for, even if it’s just “I want to feel human again,” call the spa and ask what they recommend. Booking early also helps them pair you with the right therapist, prep the room, and suggest anything you should know before coming in (like skipping lotion or shaving beforehand for a scrub).
I always tell clients, come 20–30 minutes early. Not because we need you to, but because you need you to.
Getting there ahead of time gives you space to check in, change, and start letting your shoulders drop. No one unwinds while rushing into a robe. Plus, many spas have herbal teas, foot soaks, or lounges that set the tone before your treatment even begins.
If there’s a sauna, steam room, or even just a warm shower, use it. Heat opens up your muscles, boosts blood flow, and helps you sink into your body a little more.
You don’t have to do a full hydrotherapy circuit if you’re not up for it. Just 10–15 minutes of warmth helps your massage go deeper without the body tensing up as much.
One of the easiest ways to ruin a good massage is to skip the water. Treatments like body wraps, steam, and deep massage help your system move out waste, but if you’re dry, that process stalls.
Keep sipping water, especially room temperature or warm herbal tea. Avoid coffee and alcohol, both will dehydrate you and mess with your recovery.
You don’t need five treatments in one visit. Honestly, it’s better to do two well and leave space in between than to jam your day full.
Take 15–20 minutes between sessions to sit, stretch, sip tea, or just lie back with your eyes closed. When you give your body a minute to settle, the benefits of each treatment last longer and hit deeper.
You’re allowed to ask for what you need. If the pressure is too deep, say so. If you’re cold, ask for a blanket. If you need a minute before standing up, take it.
The best sessions come from listening to your own signals and not pushing through discomfort just to be polite.
The spa isn’t a place to catch up on messages or scroll. It’s one of the few places where no one needs anything from you.
Switch off your phone, or better yet, leave it in the locker. This simple move gives your mind space to rest, the kind it rarely gets anymore.
Maybe it’s a new kind of massage. Maybe it’s a steam bath or an Ayurvedic oil treatment. Trying something unfamiliar doesn’t just break the routine, it can introduce your body to a new way of healing.
Ask the front desk or your therapist what they’d recommend based on how you’re feeling. Sometimes the treatment you didn’t know about is the one that makes the biggest difference.
Bring clothes that don’t pinch or press. Skip the makeup and perfume. Don’t rush to a meeting right afterward.
Let the calm linger. If you walk out of the spa and immediately tense up again, what was the point?
The hardest part of a spa day, for many, is simply letting go. You don’t need to be productive. You don’t need to think ahead. Just be there.
Take in the feeling of warm oil on your skin. Notice the texture of the towel, the rhythm of your breath. Let your thoughts drift and settle. This is what your nervous system has been craving, a pause, a moment of stillness.
