Sauna and steam therapy uses controlled heat to promote detoxification, muscle relaxation, and deep cleansing of the body. At Real Therapy Spa in Thamel, Kathmandu, we offer separate sauna and steam facilities for men and women — providing a private, comfortable environment to sweat, detox, and unwind before or after your massage session.

While often grouped together, sauna and steam work differently. The sauna uses dry heat (typically 70–100°C) to raise your core body temperature and induce deep sweating. The steam room uses moist heat at a lower temperature (40–50°C) with near-100% humidity to open the airways and hydrate the skin. Both deliver significant health benefits — and using them in combination creates a more complete detoxification experience. Sessions are unlimited duration.

Sauna vs Steam — What's the Difference?

Sauna (dry heat) raises the body's core temperature quickly, triggering intense sweating. This sweating flushes toxins through the skin, improves cardiovascular function (the heart rate increases similarly to moderate exercise), and deeply relaxes the muscles. Sauna is more effective for detoxification, cardiovascular benefits, and muscle relaxation.

Steam room (wet heat) operates at a lower temperature but with high humidity. The moist air opens the respiratory passages, making steam particularly beneficial for people with sinus congestion, asthma, or bronchial issues. The humidity also hydrates the skin, opens pores, and promotes a deep cleansing of the skin's surface. Steam is more effective for respiratory health, skin hydration, and pore cleansing.

Using both in sequence is the most effective approach. Start with the steam room (to open pores and hydrate the skin), then move to the sauna (to trigger deep sweating and cardiovascular response). Finish with a cool shower to close the pores and invigorate circulation.

Who Should Use Sauna and Steam?

Anyone booking a massage. Sauna and steam before your massage is one of the best preparation methods available. The heat relaxes the muscles, increases blood flow, and makes the tissue more responsive to massage techniques — meaning your therapist can work more effectively with less discomfort. Many of our spa packages include sauna/steam before deep tissue or Swedish massage.

Trekkers wanting to detox after days on the trail. Multi-day trekking creates metabolic waste buildup in the muscles and exposes the body to dust, pollution, and environmental toxins. A sauna/steam session helps the body flush these through sweat — a natural detoxification process that's much faster than waiting for the body to clear them on its own.

People with sinus congestion or respiratory discomfort. Kathmandu's air quality, particularly in winter, can trigger sinus issues and respiratory discomfort. The steam room's moist heat opens nasal passages, thins mucus, and provides relief from congestion. Regular steam sessions during the dusty season can significantly improve respiratory comfort.

Anyone seeking stress relief and muscle relaxation. Heat therapy is one of the oldest and most effective relaxation methods. The sustained warmth reduces muscle tension, lowers cortisol, and produces a meditative state of calm. It's effective on its own or as a complement to massage therapy.

Benefits of Sauna and Steam

Detoxification through deep sweating. Sweating is the body's natural mechanism for expelling toxins, heavy metals, and metabolic waste. A sauna session produces significantly more sweat than normal activity — accelerating the detoxification process and leaving you feeling noticeably lighter and cleaner.

Improved cardiovascular function. Regular sauna use has been extensively studied and shown to improve heart health. The heat increases heart rate and dilates blood vessels — providing a cardiovascular workout similar to moderate exercise. Consistent sauna use is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Muscle relaxation and pain relief. Heat penetrates into the muscle tissue, increasing blood flow and relaxing contracted fibres. This is particularly effective for chronic tension in the back, shoulders, and neck. Using the sauna before a massage amplifies the benefits of both treatments.

Skin cleansing and improved complexion. The combination of steam (which opens pores and hydrates) and sauna (which triggers deep sweating) provides a thorough cleansing of the skin. Impurities, dead cells, and excess oil are flushed from the pores. Regular sessions improve skin clarity, texture, and overall complexion. For deeper skin work, combine with a body scrub or facial treatment.

Respiratory relief. Steam inhalation opens the airways, loosens mucus, and soothes irritated nasal and bronchial passages. This provides immediate relief from congestion and supports long-term respiratory health.

Better sleep. The rise and subsequent fall in body temperature after a sauna or steam session mimics the body's natural sleep preparation process. Using the facilities in the evening can significantly improve sleep quality that night.

What to Expect at Real Therapy Spa

Our sauna and steam facilities are available as a standalone service or as part of a spa package. Separate facilities ensure privacy and comfort for both men and women.

Recommended routine: Start with 10–15 minutes in the steam room. Shower briefly with cool water. Then spend 15–20 minutes in the sauna. Finish with a cool shower. Rest for 5–10 minutes with water before your massage session. The entire sauna/steam routine takes approximately 30–40 minutes.

Drink water before, during, and after to stay hydrated. Avoid heavy meals for at least an hour before using the facilities. If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable at any point, step out — heat tolerance varies between individuals.

Who Should Avoid Sauna and Steam?

Consult your doctor first if you have uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, active heart conditions, are pregnant, have open wounds or severe skin conditions, or are recovering from surgery. People with respiratory conditions should check with their doctor before using the sauna (dry heat may be irritating), though the steam room is generally beneficial for respiratory health.
